  Zumurrud, the emerald, is no ordinary slave. She chooses her master from among the interested buyers and even pays the purchase price herself. She and poor young Ali are happy until a scorned buyer, the Christ Raschid ed-Din, kidnaps her. However, she is able to escape and on the flight through the desert comes disguised as a man to an empire in which, after the death of the old king, the new king is expected, who is supposed to come out of the desert. She is crowned king. In order to find Ali again, she gives a big festival to which all men of the empire are invited. First she discovers her kidnapper Raschid ed-Din and has him killed. But then she discovers Ali Shir. She makes him a vizier, invites him to her castle without revealing herself to him. At night she demands that Ali come to bed with her. He is horrified until he feels who he has in front of him under the silk blanket. In the original, the story of Zumurrud, one of the most beautiful from 1001 Nights, is much more complex than our opera version.
