ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The premiere of the one-act opera “Zorya” by Ukrainian composer Ihor Sonevytskyi took place in Lviv Organ Hall. This vivid and sharply sarcastic work was performed by the symphonic orchestra of the Luhansk Philharmonic conducted by Ivan Ostapovych.
“Zorya” is a satirical opera about a totalitarian regime and art. Created in the 1960s by Ukrainian artists in exile – composer Ihor Sonevytskyi and librettist Leonid Poltava – this mini-opera vividly and accurately reflects the situation of a creative individual under a totalitarian regime. Art forced to conform to the “leader” will never be genuine, as the composer asserts. Moreover, such an artist, no matter how hard they try to please the “patron,” is always in a risky position. Today, this music sounds highly relevant, as Ukraine is once again struggling against russian totalitarianism, which threatens the free world.
The Lviv Organ Hall is bringing lesser-known aspects of Ukrainian musical culture back to life. The premiere is part of the Ukrainian Live strategy for promoting Ukrainian music.
