In 2020, the Foundation for Cultural Renewal commissioned Gregor A. Mayrhofer to compose an oratorio on Pope Francis’ environmental encyclical “Laudato si’”. Gregor Mayrhofer, born in 1987, has already created an extensive musical oeuvre. Among the now approximately one hundred compositions there are works for orchestra, chamber music ensembles, vocal ensembles, solo works for individual instruments, as well as various jazz compositions. In 2018 he composed the Insect Concerto for the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic to draw attention to the global decline of insects. The Recycling Concerto followed in 2021, a concert for recycling percussion and orchestra, with which Mayrhofer addresses the garbage problem.

Gregor Mayrhofer studied composition and conducting at the Musikhochschule in Munich, at the Paris Conservatory, at the Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf and at the Juilliard School in New York. In 2017 he was brought in by Sir Simon Rattle as an assistant to the Berlin Philharmonic. There he assisted well-known conductors such as. Kiril Petrenko, Teodor Currentzis, Mariss Jansons and François Xavier-Roth. As a conductor, he works with the orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera, the SWR Symphony Orchestra, MusicAeterna, Britten Sinfonia, the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the State Philharmonic Rhineland-Palatinate, the Württemberg Philharmonic Reutlingen and the Munich chamber orchestra. He conducted his own world premieres with the Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Ensemble Intercontemporain in the Cologne and Paris Philharmonic. He has also conducted concerts with Ensemble Ascolta, Ensemble Proton Bern, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and soloists such as Daniil Trifonov, Georg Nigl, Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Julian Prégardien.

As a pianist, Gregor Mayrhofer performs with his brother in the duo Imbrothersation, for which he was awarded the Tassilo Kultur Prize by the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2008. In 2017 he received the Charles Schiff Conducting Award and in 2018 the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize.
