The perilous situation of Catholics in the England of Elizabeth I meant that Byrd’s three Masses had to be sung in secret in the homes of Catholic believers: once hidden from view, they are now regarded as amongst the peaks of the composer’s art. Here they are combined with additional settings associated with particular feasts spread throughout the liturgical year.
