70 years after Prokofiev’s death, the Bavarian State Opera is staging a new production of “War and Peace”. Spiritus rector of the tour de force is General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski, directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov.
Who does not know it – the epochal novel “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy (1868)? Napoleon Bonaparte’s campaign against Russia and the associated political and military decisions are contrasted with the world of private and social life in aristocratic circles. In his opera adaptation (1945-57), the composer Sergei Prokofiev is concerned with keeping the different plot strands and spheres in balance. He tries to intertwine them and to show their correspondence. The result is a remarkably ambitious contribution to Russian opera history.
