  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The two-part documentary looks at the current festival and asks about the future of Wagner’s great-granddaughter and artistic director Katharina Wagner, Minister of State Claudia Roth and Georg von Waldenfels, chairman of the board of directors and the association promoting the Bayreuth Festival.

“Opera must open itself up to a diverse, colorful society and must also consider what new forms and what new means there are.”
Claudia Roth, Staatsministerin für Kultur und Medien

Soprano Waltraud Meier has been celebrated for her roles in Bayreuth for years, and Oksana Lyniv was the first woman to conduct at the festival in 2021. The American theater maker Jay Scheib is directing the new “Parsifal” this year. They all worked in Bayreuth and tell of the aura of the festival. About what feels different there than in other opera houses.

Bayreuth Festival: Parsifal with glasses and gaming optics
But also about what is snagging and missing there. For Jay Scheib’s “Parsifal” the absence was the main point for a long time. His planned directing concept with gaming optics runs on augmented reality technology, for which AR glasses are required as equipment. The full purchase of the glasses was not waved through by the Board of Directors of the Bayreuth Festival, so only a fraction of the audience will have AR glasses on their noses to be able to immerse themselves in the gaming world of “Parsifal”. As artistic director, Katharina Wagner was able to bring Jay Scheib on board with his new form of direction, but the board of directors responsible for finances did not equip the luggage with the necessary glasses. Who is allowed to determine which director’s ideas are implemented and how the Bayreuth Festival will continue as a unique piece of German cultural history?

Katharina Wagner’s contract expires in 2025. So is her time as director of the Bayreuth Festival coming to an end soon? In 2026 the festival will be 150 years old. Without the Wagners at the top? The end of an era? The here and now and the future of the Bayreuth Festival in an exciting story from the Green Hill.
