ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The one-act comedic chamber opera “Vinkensport, or The Finch Opera” was written by composer David T. Little and librettist Royce Vavrek. It satirizes professional finch-calling, a real-life Belgian folk sport. The opera premiered in 2010. It was commissioned for the Bard College Conservatory of Music.
The opera features six competitors. They are known as “trainers” of their birds. The birds have witty names, such as Atticus Finch, Hans Sachs, and Sir Elton John. They participate in an annual finch-sitting competition. The sport involves each participant sitting in front of a box with a bird inside. A flag waves, and the person whose chaffinch “sings a certain call: the ‘susk-e-wiet'” the most times in an hour wins.
The opera includes the competitors’ inner thoughts and flashbacks. These reveal their individual backstories, eccentricities, rivalries, loneliness, and desires. It uses humor and a modern language to explore themes of egotism, competition, and the human need for connection.
