ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The concert is notable for its dual purpose: it is a charity event where each ticket equates to the donation of a new toy, which the Foundation will deliver to the Red Cross and Andex. Thanks to this act of solidarity from the attendees, children from low-income families in the city will receive gifts on Three Kings’ Day. Furthermore, the concert pays tribute to councilman Alberto Jiménez-Becerril and lawyer Ascensión García, who were murdered by ETA on January 30, 1998, as well as to all other victims of terrorism. For this reason, the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra premiered the work In Memoriam , by composer José Ángel Esteban.
The next piece was a nod to Seville as a city of opera, as the orchestra performed different parts of Carmen , Georges Bizet’s masterpiece, which features the Andalusian capital as its main setting. Bruna de Castro sang the famous Habanera aria . In addition, musicians Claudia Gallardo and José Antonio Moreno performed as soloists, delighting the audience with the pieces Meditation from Thaïs and The Typewriter , respectively.
Subsequently, classical music and film have come together in different masterpieces that have thrilled audiences, such as Lascia ch’io pianga by Georg Friedrich Händel; Barcarolle by Jacques Offenbach; The Sleeping Beauty by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; and the Waltz from the Jazz Suite by Dmitri Shostakovich, as well as a medley of different pieces, very recognizable to listeners.
In the final stretch of the concert, opera and the voice of Bruna de Castro returned to the stage at the Teatro de Capitanía General in Seville, with O mio babbino caro and Vissi d’arte , by Giacomo Puccini, and Libiamo ne’lieti calici , by Giuseppe Verdi.
To bring the event to a close, the orchestra engaged in a musical dialogue with the audience, welcoming Christmas with traditional carols that resonated with the voices of all those present. Additionally, a piece that is a staple of the Christmas classical music concert program was performed: the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss Sr., which received a standing ovation and brought to a close another successful edition of this initiative by the Alberto Jiménez-Becerril Foundation.
