ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
During the Early Music Festival 2022, ĀRT HOUSE 17 will perform a new version of the Johannes Passion: the ‘Utrechter Passion’. A passion about the persecution of homosexuals.
The St John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach moves hundreds of thousands of concert visitors every year. To the unworldly beautiful music of Bach, dramaturg Thomas Höft – who was still co-curator of the Utrecht Early Music Festival in 2019 – wrote a new text that sets the score in a universal no-man’s-land, somewhere between secular practice and committed experience.
The author shifts the focus from the church to the town square with a scenario around events that took place in Utrecht in 1730 and 1731. The persecution of homosexuals then degenerated into the infamous Utrecht sodomy trials, many of which ended in execution. Together with top soloists, ĀRT HOUSE 17 voices a message that needs to be heard today.
