Henry Alves de Mesquita
A key figure in Brazilian music, Henrique Alves de Mesquita was the first composer to receive a scholarship from Emperor Pedro II to further his education in Europe, completing his studies at the Paris Conservatory. In addition to being a composer, he worked as a conductor, organist and trumpet player, and is recognized for coining the expression “Brazilian tango”. His relevance to Brazilian music led him to be chosen as patron of chair number 16 at the Brazilian Academy of Music.
