ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Kåre Kolberg ( April 24, 1936 in Birkenes ; August 19, 2014 in Holmestrand ) was a Norwegian composer and organist.

Kolberg obtained his cantor and organist exams at the Stockholm Conservatory in 1958 and was organist at Grorud Kirke for twenty years from 1961. He graduated from the University of Oslo with a Master’s degree in musicology in 1963 .

From 1964 to 1966 he was an assistant at the University of Oslo, and from 1967 to 1970 he was a music reporter at Dagbladet . From 1966 to 1969 he was a fellow of the Norwegian Research Council ( Norges almenvitenskapelige forskningsråd , NAVF). For a short time he also worked as a music consultant for Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation ‘s television .

As a representative of Norwegian contemporary composers, Kolberg was chairman of the society nyMusikk from 1970 to 1973, chairman of the coordinating committee of Kunstneraksjon-74 from 1974 to 1976 , and chairman of the Norwegian Composers’ Association from 1979 to 1984.

As a composer, Kolberg followed the avant-garde trends of his time, striving to dissolve the division between “classical” music and jazz , between music and related art forms. Plym-Plym (1966) for mixed choir, vocal quartet and speaker is a collage and speech composition in which singing, speech and meaningless phonetic sounds are interwoven. A central work of the 1960s is the church ballet Hakena’nit (The Canaanite Woman) for organ, percussion and dance (1968). In Jaba 768 (1968) Kolberg has three jazz musicians improvise on the basis of a graphic score. With Tivoli he created Norway’s first television opera in 1974. The vocal quartet For the Time Being was voted Work of the Year 1984 by the Composers’ Association.
