ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Song of Love was written upson Smyth’s return from Leipzig to England in 1888. In Leipzig, she had spent the previous years under the wing of many reputable musicians. notably, she was encouraged by Tchaikovsky and Hermann Levi to study orchestration, and at their suggestions spent many nights at Wagner’s operas, studying them closely. Wagnerian influences, as well as elements from Brahms and Clara Schumann, are everywhere in The Song of Love, which was most likely her first large scale orchestral work.
