Plot:
Act I
Garden. Lord Henry visits his artist friend Basil, who, inspired by feelings, has painted a portrait of a charming young man, Dorian Grey. After meeting Lord Henry, who fosters a hedonistic worldview, Dorian wishes to stay young forever and begins a new life – he begins to search for undiscovered sensations. In a poor theater, he meets and seems to fall in love with a young actress, Sybil, but in reality Dorian is only fascinated by her acting. After a failed performance, they are left alone backstage: Sibyl finally feels happy because she understands the uncertainty of the theater and the stage, and Dorian, enraged, asks to be excused for his poor acting. Rejected and despised, Sibyl cannot endure it and commits suicide. With Dorian’s first sin, his portrait changes for the first time. The fateful wish is fulfilled – Dorian will remain young forever, and the portrait will carry the burden of his shame.
Act II
The year is flying by. And although Dorian is not affected by old age, his moral decline becomes even more evident. Reliving the rumors, Dorian is visited by Basil. She blames him and confesses her feelings, but Dorian lacks patience – he decides to show Basil the changed, hideous portrait and, in an inhuman rage, stabs the artist. To get rid of his guilt and escape from his tormenting thoughts, Dorian goes out to wander among the poor, where his bad habits are revealed in all their beauty. There, Dorian is attacked by Sybil’s brother James, who has been seeking revenge for Sybil’s death for years. Shocked by this event, Dorian promises to be good. He longs for a clean past, a clear conscience, and realizes that the only way to get it back is to destroy the portrait.
