ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
One of the largest Belarusian composers of the second half of the 20th century, People’s Artist of Belarus, professor, laureate of the State Prize of Belarus and the Lenin Komsomol Prize Heinrich Wagner marks 100 years since his birth.
The composer Heinrich Matusovich Wagner was born and grew up in the Polish town of Girardów on July 2, 1922 in the family of the musician Matus Wagner. His parents decided his future: he had to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a musician. From the age of seven, Henry began to attend school and at the same time take music lessons. In 1936, the cherished dream of a young man came true: he became a student of the Warsaw Conservatory.
In Minsk, Wagner came from Warsaw in 1939 when the Second World War began. The only possible salvation was emigration, which, thought, would be temporary, but lasted all life. Belarus became the second birthplace of Heinrich Wagner. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, he evacuated to Dushanbe, where he worked as a concert master in the Tajik State Philharmonic, and since 1943 he became the head of the musical part of the front-line theatre. In 1945 he returned to Minsk and continued his studies at the Conservatory. In 1948 he completed his studies in the piano class at the beautiful pianist, Professor Grigory Shershevsky and the class of composition – at the classics of Belarusian art Anatoly Bogatyrev. In 1976, Heinrich Wagner was awarded the title of assistant professor, in 1988 – professors.
Wagner has mastered the best traditions of Belarusian academic art. He was interested in Belarusian folklore and history. His works are multifaceted: they are filled with the energy of cheerfulness and optimism, bright emotionality, dynamic movement, acute drama images, deep lyricism and contemplation.
