Composer’s note
The Medium is musical theater – an operatic “tour-de-force” – for
Mezzo-soprano solo. Like Mad King and Miss Donnithorne, older musical theater characters from my works, of which it is a direct descendant, stands out
The Medium is characterized by a frightening ambiguity.
Is she a medium? Or does it only consciously represent one thing? From whom seems
obsessing over her – is it her true self, as opposed to the often sad one
and confused creature presented to us? Does she have a dark secret?
concerning a child she once had – which she does not even care about herself
admits? In the end we wonder if she might even be a patient
mental institution is referring to electro-therapy or worse
prepared.
I have dedicated this work to Mary Thomas and I am writing this work to her
