  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Dreamer is clinging to the top of a windblown tower; she desperately wishes to climb down to safety. But each time she tries to descend, The Tented Man forces her back. “Your place is at the top,” he scolds. He attempts to flatter her: “I desire only to look up at you.” The Dreamer first buys his flattery, then bemoans her position. The chorus echoes her. A new voice emerges: it is The Confidante, who understands the Dreamer’s pain. She tells The Dreamer that The Tented Man is not as threatening as he seems. The Confidante addresses the Tented Man – Who Are You? What Do You Want? The Tented Man is angry. He repeats himself; he makes no sense, he is unreal. The chorus asks: might The Dreamer try again to descend? The Dreamer begins to step down. The Tented Man fades away. The Confidante, The Dreamer and the chorus sing of the Dreamer’s coming freedom, as the Dreamer touches the ground, humming her peace.
Dedicated to the memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933-2020) “Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time.”
