“The Carriage” is a comic one-act opera based on the story of the same name by N.V. Gogol. The recitative fragments are based on Gogol’s original text.
The opera is framed by symphonic variations (introduction and afterword), which anchor the form of the performance. They create a musical image of the town of B.: dreary and boring, it seems to embody all the worst traits of provincial Russian towns. And while the introduction is largely figurative, in the afterword, the same variations sound like a philosophical reflection on human vices. The same theme characterizes Chertokutsky, one of the “chief aristocrats of the B… district.” Driven by a vain desire to become one of the officers’ circle, he finds himself in a situation completely incongruous with his position as a “pretty landowner.” Simply put, Chertokutsky drinks himself into oblivion. This discrepancy is emphasized by the combination of seemingly incompatible instruments—the balalaika and the contrabassoon. The carriage, around which the action unfolds, transforms from an object of boasting into a place of shame for the protagonist. The final scene brings not only a narrative but also a symbolic end to the story of falsehood, worthlessness, and lies.
    Vyacheslav Kruglik
