Who will be the new “Madama Butterfly”?
The host and judge of this music-theatrical audition is none other than… the son of Madama Butterfly!
Giacomo Puccini died 100 years ago, and his opera “Madama Butterfly” was premiered 120 years ago. The musicologist Antonino Titone described this opera as a “diabolical machine that races along in neutral”. Doesn’t such a formulation remind us of… our current state of the world? What would an attempt by such a machine to brake sound like?
In this operatic transposition between verismo and psycho-drama, “The Butterfly Equation” makes such an attempt to slow down the world based on Puccini’s opera.
Was Puccini, the last of the great opera composers, perhaps even the first of the new music theatre?
