The widow Popova has locked herself in her house and sworn an oath to mourn and be faithful to her dead husband (who in himself had a lot of love affairs on the side) for the rest of his life.
Her servant Luka tries to get her to go out again, but she refuses.Then comes Smirnov, a stranger who has a debt to claim from Popava’s husband. Since she can not pay immediately, Smirnov decides to stay.
The quarrel between Popova and Smirnov escalates and eventually turns into a duel, but no one is able to shoot the other as completely different feelings have arisen…
