The Plot:
Following Chekhov’s play, the opera tells the witty story of Mrs. Popova, a grieving widow, and Smirnov, a boorish landowner who arrives to collect a debt owed by her late husband. Their furious argument escalates until Smirnov challenges her to a duel—which ultimately sparks an unexpected, passionate romance.
