When writing the libretto, Nejca Gazvoda was primarily attracted by Tesla’s human strangeness, “even his lostness in this world, which he mastered through physics to the point where he could not otherwise” . “A person who consciously renounces the fact that he will probably become the richest man in the world because he wants to help a friend probably ranks high on the scale of mental illness in capitalism, but in my value system he ranks ‘only’ very high. I was interested in this aspect, ” says Gazvoda.
There is no more romance in genius
It is important that one remains human, he says. “The performance jumps in time not because the two times are so different, but because the times of Tesla and today, say Elon Musk, are unfortunately so similar,” he thinks. “The so-called great personalities are increasingly tied to capital, and as such inseparable from their companies, which hold us by the neck. There is no romance left in genius – if there ever was. We are in this ship together, and if anyone would understand that, it would be Tesla. Taking care of everyone is also taking care of yourself. We are too connected. But I’m afraid that those who could do something about it don’t understand it,” Gazvoda wrote in the theater newspaper.
Combining opera and musical
Composer Slavko Avsenik Jr. says that he spent quite a bit of time pondering and experimenting until he found the beginning of the ballad, which continued to unfold spontaneously – again and again until the end. “When I entered the work process, when I discovered the content strength of his libretto, disappointment soon turned into pure enthusiasm, because in addition to interesting plots, it also enabled the merging of opera and musical into something that in this case was even closer to me – opera the musical.”
