  Indigo and the 40 robbers is the first performed operetta by Johann Strauss (son). The libretto comes from several editors, among whom Richard Genée and Adolphe Jaime were, but were already revised after the premiere. The text is based on fairy tale of from a thousand and one nights. The work premiered on 10. February 1871 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
  Action

  The original operetta, premiered in 1871, is set on an island called Makassar in the 19th. century.

  The girl Fantasca and her companion Janio from Vienna suffer a shipwreck. They are rescued and then come as slaves to King Indigo of Makassar. He falls in love with Fantasca and takes her into his harem, where he holds her captive. However, he has no chance of being answered with his love advertising. In order to be able to win them over, he takes advice from Janio, whom he appoints as his advisor at the same time. This in turn awakens the jealousy of the influential chief priest Romadour, who is also from Vienna. He sees in Janio’s appointment a danger to his own position at the king’s court.

  With the help of Ali Baba, Fantasca and other ladies from the Harem are planning their escape. Romadour, however, quickly comes behind this plan. He sees for himself the chance to get rid of the hated Janio, because he rightly assumes that he will join the escape of Fantasca. Therefore, he does not reveal the escape plan, which then also succeeds promptly. The refugees hide in a forest, where they dress up as robbers. The ascending troops of the king, who were to pursue the refugees, do not recognize the disguises and assume to be opposed to actually dangerous robbers. Out of fear, they take flight.

  Actually, the refugees would now be rescued. However, Ali Baba and Janio now decide for themselves to capitalize on history and take a simpler further escape route. They stun Fantasca and the other ladies and, still dressed as robbers, bring them back to the royal court. There, the king, who once had a reward for the capture of the actually existing robbers, must stand by his word and release Fantasca, Janio and Ali Baba to freedom for reward.
