A recording of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ninth” is always an event, also because the symphony with the final chorus “An die Freude” is understood all over the world as an appeal for peace and international understanding. The catchy melody to the Schiller verse »Freude, schöner Götterfunken« was not chosen as the anthem of the European Union for nothing.
The recording, conducted by Bernard Haitink, becomes an event in itself, since it is a recording of his last concerts conducting the Bavarian Radio Choir and Symphony Orchestra: just a few months after the two Munich concerts on February 21 and 22, 2019, the important Dutch conductor, who celebrated his 90th birthday on March 4th, the end of his career.
