ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Holland Opera presents STYX in collaboration with jongNBE and DOX at the breathtaking Fort Rijnauwen. On the banks of the Styx, Charon awaits the dead. He finds his task dull, deadly dull. After all, the dead don’t liven things up. Until Antigone appears, the feisty and buried-alive daughter of Oedipus. An encounter between two extremes within a musically whimsical setting.
Besides being a political drama, STYX is above all a family drama. We see recognizable similarities and contrasts between blood relatives. However, this pitch-black story does not lack humor. Composer Chiel Meijering has applied a rich palette of musical colors, paying attention to the drama but also to wacky musical moments for the 13-piece wind ensemble.
And with that, Charon, who has an infectious sense of humor despite his peculiar profession, plays an important role: as a ferryman, he takes the deceased across the River Styx if they give him an obol. No obol? Then he is always up for a good story.
