ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Fragments from the 1948 Broadway Opera Street Scene
A jealous husband, a mother of three who can no longer pay her rent, an old Jewish communist, young lovers… Street Scenes depicts the inhabitants and dramas of a dilapidated New York building on a scorching hot day. By setting to music the play by playwright Elmer Rice, Kurt Weill reveals the tragedy inherent in the daily life of middle-class New Yorkers between the two wars. Having moved to the United States in 1935 to flee Nazism, the composer created an “American opera” in 1947 that merges European influences and the Broadway musical in a fluid score.
This new production of Street Scenes, performed by the singers of the Académie de l’Opéra national de Paris, is presented at the MC93 and represents a new stage in a long-standing partnership between the two institutions. A children’s choir will be formed in collaboration with the conservatories of Seine-Saint-Denis especially for this creation led by conductor Yshani Perinpanayagam and staged by Ted Huffman.
