ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
THE HAUNTED MANOR is considered one of the most outstanding works of Polish national opera. The work combines romantic and comedic elements, but above all, it strongly emphasizes patriotic themes. Composed shortly after the fall of the January Uprising, it constitutes a powerful national manifesto, rooted in tradition and the spirit of the struggle for independence. The opera’s plot does not refer to a specific era; many elements are characteristic of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries; it creates a unique, old-Polish universe.

The opera presents both an idyllic portrayal of life in a Polish nobleman’s manor and a strongly emphasized idea of patriotic duty. The attitude of courage, soldierly bravery, and readiness to fight in defense of the homeland are the foundation of the values presented in the work. The creators also emphasize the family ethos, with particular emphasis on honor as one of the most important virtues. From the very first scenes, a deep internal conflict is evident – on the one hand, the desire for a peaceful, domestic life and starting a family, and on the other, a strong sense of responsibility for the fate of the homeland and a willingness to sacrifice for it. The skillful blend of patriotic, romantic, and comedic themes contributed to the enormous success of THE HAUNTED MANOR.
The opera enjoys enduring popularity and is regularly performed on Polish opera stages to this day.
