  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Les Élémens (lit. The Elements ) is a four-act opera-ballet with a prologue by French composers André Cardinal Destouches and Michel – Richard Delalande (1657–1726 ) . The libretto was by Pierre Charles Roy. On 31 December 1721, the opera-ballet was first performed at the Tuileries Palace in Paris, with King Louis XV himself dancing. Later, in 1725, the work was presented to the general public at the Paris Opera House at the Palais-Royal and remained popular for many years. According to musicologists, the significance of this work in the history of French Baroque music is extremely symbolic: it is the last appearance of Louis XV on stage, the last stage work of MR Delalande, and the last opera-ballet performed at the French court, later moving to public theaters.
“The Elements” has a typical opera-ballet structure: its four parts are musically and dramaturgically independent of each other, but contextually interconnected. The main conflict of mythological characters: the competition between Venus and Fate for control of universal chaos. Fate secretly loves Venus and will do everything to get closer to her. Venus is convinced that only she, the goddess of love, can bring all the elements out of chaos and reconcile them with each other.
Since 2020, the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre has launched a new Baroque Opera Master’s degree program, which provides singers with the opportunity to specialize in the Baroque opera genre.
