ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The first star was the world-famous bass soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre, Ildar Abdrazakov, who conquered all stages of the world’s leading opera houses. But he was not alone. Together with him, the star singer, the baritone of the New Opera, the favorite of the Moscow public, Vasily Ladyuk, and the soloist of the Youth Opera Program, soprano Kristina Mkhitaryan, also took part in the concert. The evening was accompanied by the wonderful New Opera Orchestra led by the Italian Fabio Mastrangelo.

The first section was dedicated to Verdi. In Banquo’s aria from “Macbeth” and Don Silva’s cavatina from “Ernani”, Ildar Abdrazakov demonstrated high vocal culture, the nobility of the timbre of a real Russian bass, ideal phrasing and a cantilena filled with deep feelings.

Lyrical baritone Vasily Ladyuk is gradually mastering dramatic parts. This is not the first time he has sung in concert Stankar’s aria from the opera Stiffelio, little known in Russia, and it must be admitted that he does it successfully. The voice has become thicker, and a richness of nuances appears without detriment to the sound science and beautiful cantilena.

The singers then met in an elaborate duet scene of King Philip and Rodrigo from Don Carlos. The scene turned out, forcing the audience to closely follow the relationship between the two heroes of Verdi’s opera, strong and significant personalities. True, it was felt that Vasily Ladyuk’s desire to outsing and outplay his rival Ildar prevailed. But it didn’t happen. Abdrazakov, at such a height of vocal and acting skills, is so organic in any part that, at best, he will allow his partner to be equal with him. Like the king, Philipp Abdrazakov ended the scene as a winner without any effort.

Kristina Mkhitaryan sang Gilda’s aria from Rigoletto. It was her debut, and for the first time the aria sounded very good. Nice expressive voice. There hasn’t been individuality yet, but it will come. The young singer has a large creative reserve, which is sure to be realized.

The orchestra, led by maestro Mastrangelo, played two overtures to the operas “Force of Destiny” and “Nabucco”, but the conductor himself was not up to par here. The first overture in his interpretation turned out to be not interesting, not expressive, and what is the strangest thing is not musical – the conductor is still Italian! The second one surprised me with its non-rhythmicity. Mastrangelo accompanied the singers wonderfully, apparently following them in everything, without violating the harmony of the voices and the orchestra. Well done!

In the second part, the performers included arias and duets from operas by Mozart and Rossini. In Leporello’s famous aria “Malamina il catalogo e questo” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Abdrazakov shocked with his acting temperament. How he “read” the list of his master’s lovers! Each phrase, gesture, facial expressions, voiced in a moving voice, created the image of a rogue servant who always gets out of the most risky situations safely. Then the Canzonetta of Don Juan himself was sung by Abdrazakov so gracefully and seductively that not only all the heroines of the opera, but all the spectators of the Novaya Opera succumbed to the spell of the charming Don Juan.
