Poulenc composed his Stabat Mater in memory of a friend, the painter Christian Bérard. The 12 contrasting movements form a palette of emotions, some deep, dark, and utterly serious; some exquisitely beautiful; others ferocious, brutal; others austere and deeply spiritual.
