ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
This concert, part of the Black Musics series , brings African American spirituals into dialogue with concert songs from the Afro-classical repertoire. At this intersection, memories of slavery, popular religiosity, and academic languages converge, ranging from traditional chants to compositions by Harry Burleigh and Florence Price, the latter currently being rehabilitated as the first African American female composer in the United States.
