Originally written as a song cycle, Timothy Nelson re-composed Songs of the Fisherman for the forces seen on this video. Tenor Brian Arreola and choreographer Gretchen Alterowitz hoped to find a way to synthesize the lyrical power of operatic singing with the kinesthetic narrative potential of dance. The singer-dancer relationship is fluid throughout the work, with the dancer taking on shifting roles of lover, rival and society.
