ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Silvano is an opera by Pietro Mascagni , with a libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti , inspired by a novel by Alphonse Karr . It was performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 25 March 1895 .
The opera, described in the score as a sea drama, represents Mascagni’s return to the verismo opera genre he had pioneered with Cavalleria rusticana . Its lack of success was attributed either to the libretto or to the music’s insufficient emotional impact. Mascagni himself described Silvano as “two acts of trivial substance.”
Plot
Silvano, a fisherman turned smuggler to escape poverty, returns to his hometown after being released from prison. He discovers that his fiancée, Matilde, has meanwhile fallen in love with Renzo, a violent fisherman. Matilde is about to leave Renzo, but when Silvano catches the lovers together, he kills Renzo with a gunshot .(Visited 3 times, 1 visits today)
