Symphony No. 3
ALBAN BERG
Seven early songs
JEAN SIBELIUS
Symphony No. 2
Seven early songs (without opus number) is a collection of songs by Alban Berg, written between 1905 and 1908.
The texts come from seven different German language poets. The songs are stylistically very diverse, ranging from late romanticism to early forms of atonality. There are piano and orchestral versions. The collection was published in 1928 and is dedicated to Helene Berg.
The individual songs:
Night – Text: Carl Hauptmann
Reed song – Nikolaus Lenau
The Nightingale – Theodor Storm
Crowned with dreams – Rainer Maria Rilke
In the room – Johannes sleep
Love ode – Otto Erich Hartleben
Summer days – Paul Hohenberg
The seven songs were originally set for a medium-high voice. In 1928 the composer transposed the songs for high voice and orchestra. In performance practice, the piano and orchestral versions exist side by side, as do the middle and high voices. On November 6, 1928, Robert Heger conducted the premiere of the orchestral version, sung by Claire Born, in the large hall of the Vienna Music Association.
