Ruud Langgaard – Music of the Spheres, 1916-1918
To his own surprise, the bizarre sound worlds pioneered by Ligeti had already been entered earlier. This became apparent when *Sfaerernes Musik* by the Danish composer Ruud Langgaard was rediscovered in the late 1960s. This highly original and extremely complex piece, completed in 1918, anticipates Ligeti’s slowly shifting tone clusters and excels in unusual playing techniques. Combined with the apocalyptic message, it is unsettling music in every respect—and the public was not yet ready for that after the First World War. No wonder that it remained limited to two performances at the time. The work only caught on after the avant-garde of the fifties and sixties, but by then Langgaard himself was no longer alive… Langgaard’s influences were: Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss, and the 19th-century Danish composer Niels Gade.
