  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

From 1719 to 1721, Reinhard Keiser, a highly esteemed opera composer in his time, stayed at the Württemberg court in Stuttgart with the aim of obtaining the vacant position of court Kapellmeister. To this end, he composed a homage cantata for Prince Eberhard Ludwig, a “pleasure dispute” in which several gods competed to see which of them the prince would favor. The libretto of the cantata, which was probably performed in a serenata in Ludwigsburg in 1720, is still preserved, but the music has been lost. In the version compiled for the concert, the work is heard anew with arias and choruses from Reinhard Keiser’s operatic oeuvre and newly composed recitatives. Reinhard Keiser ultimately did not receive the position of court Kapellmeister; Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello was given preference. This did not hinder Keiser’s career; as early as 1722, he was mentioned as royal court Kapellmeister at the Danish court in Copenhagen. A good 300 years later, the serenata from Keiser’s brief Stuttgart episode was performed again for the first time.
