ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
✨ A new journey through music, words, and images
A powerful two-act opera, written by Giovanna Dongu and inspired by Khaled Hosseini’s ” A Prayer by the Sea .”
A universal tale of hope and humanity, brought to life on stage through music, choir, dance, and visual arts, in a collaborative and immersive experience.
The composition
The work, which alternates music, singing, acting, and dance, unfolds like a powerful letter from a father to his daughter, Aurora, on a starry night on a beach. His memories resurface of his grandparents’ farm, the fields in bloom, family walks, images of a serene past intertwined with the anguish of the present and the uncertainty of the future, marked by exile to lands “where no one invited us.” The story is filled with men, women, and children united by the same quest for salvation and dignity, while the narrative alternates between the roar of bombs and the power of prayer, culminating in dawn as a symbol of rebirth. The reference to little Alan Kurdi, the Syrian child who drowned in the Mediterranean in 2015, transforms the scene into a universal memorial dedicated to all victims of forced migration. The composer’s choice to make the protagonists Sardinian aims to bring this experience closer to her people, transforming it into a shared and deeply felt narrative.
If the Sea Knew… is the culmination of a program of training in transversal skills and orientation promoted by the Fondazione Accademia, which involved students from the “Azuni” Music and Dance High School and the “Figàri” Art High School in Sassari, along with multidisciplinary conferences for schools. The theater thus becomes a place of remembrance and active citizenship, a space where grief is transformed into participation and indifference into solidarity.
