ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Who is Marcelo Beltrán?
He is a musician from Quito who trained at the National Conservatory of Music. He began his career in popular music, playing the guitar and the quena. Little by little, his artistic interests became more complex, and he felt the need for broader training, which led him to the conservatory. His composing activity began around the 1990s, always linked to the Mamacuchara Cultural Center and its ensembles. These groups began their activity in those years with the formation of the Andean Instruments Orchestra. This is basically his composition school: the daily practice with these groups of learning how each instrument sounds.
“This is a training that no conservatory or academy in the world can offer you.” What this artist is interested in is that “people get to know my music, listen to it, and if I can make someone feel even slightly moved by my music, I feel like my job is done.”
He has composed other works, including “Tríptico” (Tríptico), a collection of three Quito legends: “El Gallito de la Catedral” (The Rooster of the Cathedral), “San Antonio de Cabeza” (San Antonio Head), and “Cantuña” (Cantuña). This work is in opera format. He also composed a Requiem for symphonic band, choir, and soloists, among others.
He maintains that inspiration is a myth, “to compose, you have to sit down and work, take notes, deeply nourish yourself with the theme you are going to compose about, and that means trying things out and making mistakes.”
