ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Salvator Rosa (also known as Salvador Rosa) is the fifth opera by the Brazilian composer , Antônio Carlos Gomes (1836 – 1896). The libretto , by Antonio Ghislanzoni , is inspired by the novel Masaniello (1851), by the French writer Charles Jean-Baptiste Jacquot (1812 – 1880), who, in turn, was freely inspired by the lives of the Italian painter and poet Salvator Rosa and Masaniello , a Neapolitan fishmonger who led a popular revolt in Naples , between July 7 and 16, 1647 , against the fiscal oppression of the Spanish Habsburg government.
Salvator Rosa premiered at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy, on March 21, 1874.
Following the premiere of the opera Fosca (1873), Carlos Gomes decided to write an opera to “please” the Italian public with captivating melodies and a libretto based on the story of an Italian hero. It was written in six months, as a kind of revenge because Fosca, so meticulously crafted, was not well received. In Fosca, the music was composed with great erudition, whereas Salvador Rosa’s work had a more popular approach. It ended up becoming one of his greatest successes, so much so that in the years 1876-77 it was presented at the opening of the opera season in six of the most important Italian theaters.

vielleicht schon vom Maler Salvadore Rosa gehört.
