ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
SALT-ICE connects children with professional artists for an interdisciplinary production which includes storytelling, music, dance, paper art and videography. The story, written by Susanne Felicitas Wolf, depicts a thrilling adventure across a fairy tale landscape of salt mines, mountains and ice caves. The vision of composer and director Ruben Zahra adopts paper as the primary material for the costumes, props and set design through the application of origami techniques and pop-up paper sculptures. The contemporary aesthetic of the mise-en-scène is also reflected in the music and the dances.
SALT-ICE children’s “origami” opera premiered in February 2024 for the Salzkammergut European Capital of Culture. This project portrays a unique aesthetic of origami paper sculptures for the costumes and scenography, created by artists from Japan, Wales, Germany and the UK. SALT-ICE has a strong outreach dimension, connecting a children’s choir and dance students with professional artists. SALT-ICE was recently selected for the Young Audiences Music Awards which took place in Norway and will be travelling internationally in 2025.
