ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Synopsis
The action takes place in the 1st century BC , in the palace of King Herod , Tetrarch of Judea . The beautiful and poisonous Princess Salome , daughter of Queen Herodias , arouses much desire. Herod, her father-in-law, is himself not insensitive to the charms of the young woman. Now Salome is in love with the prophet Iokanaan ( John the Baptist ), held prisoner in the kingdom’s dungeons. Iokanaan, obsessed with his prophecies, nevertheless refuses the advances of the beautiful princess. Wanting to wash away in blood this affront of a scorned woman, Salome asks Herod for the head of the Baptist, offering as a bargaining chip to dance almost naked before him. The Tetrarch finally gives in to her request.
Based on the tragedy Salome , which Oscar Wilde wrote in 1891 for the actress Sarah Bernhardt , Pierre Koralnik has created a modern and baroque film with a captivating and lascivious Salome ( Ludmilla Tcherina ) who explodes with sensuality in a ballet choreographed by Maurice Béjart to music by Jean Prodomidès . A large part of the film is set in the Parc Güell, designed by the great Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi in the city of Barcelona .
