ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The National Chorus of Korea’s March 1st Independence Movement Memorial Concert <Holy Shout> is a choral musical that contains the pain and hope of modern and contemporary Korean history, and is a work that is being presented as a world premiere to commemorate the spirit of March 1st. Through the stories of those who did not lose hope and maintained their dignity even in the midst of the hardships of the Japanese colonial period, it delivers a message of unity and healing that still resonates today.
The first half of the work focuses on the oppression and resistance of the Japanese colonial period, and depicts the trials and conflicts that the main character Jeong Ok-bun experiences in her life. The way she separates from her beloved fiancé and struggles to protect her own dignity amidst Japan’s harsh policies vividly recreates the pain of that era. The second half illuminates the journey of those who have been wounded toward reconciliation and healing through Jeong Ok-bun’s life after liberation. The process of moving to Hawaii, adopting a child who lost his family in the war, and planting seeds of hope for the new generation movingly shows the human will and power of recovery.
<Holy Shout> symbolizes the inner cry and dignity of human beings that were not broken even in the midst of suffering. The subtitle, ‘Cry of a Hot Spring Day’, expresses the earnest desire and joy of liberation that those who had been suppressed for a long time finally revealed. It contains the patience and inner longing for freedom that countless people endured in the midst of suffering, and the noble cry that vented their anger.
Composer Kim Min-a, who is expanding her spectrum in various fields based on Korean sentiment and modern sensibility, scriptwriter and director Kim Sook-young, who has implemented sensuous and delicate directing skills through various works such as operas and musicals, and artistic director and troupe leader Min In-ki, who is leading the status of Korean choral music, will present a moving stage imbued with the breath of history.
[Synopsis ]
“Remember, don’t forget, and move on.”
Jeong Ok-bun was a girl who dreamed of independence for her country and tried to carve out her own destiny during the chaos of the Japanese colonial period. Her love for her fiancé Kang-san was her hope and the center of her life, but the oppression of the times and severe trials lead her to an unexpected journey. Jeong Ok-bun, despite the hardships, carries love and hope deep in her heart, and with that strength, she continues to live and proves the essence of human dignity.
Even after liberation, her suffering did not end, but Ok-bun leaves for Hawaii to start a new life and adopts Choi Cheol-su, who lost his family in the war. Together with Choi Cheol-su, Ok-bun overcomes her pain and creates her own hope and peace. Moving on to the present, Ok-bun’s life shines through the novel of her grandson, Choi Kang-san. Choi Kang-san remembers his roots by recording his grandmother’s journey, and together with his daughter Eun-seo, he writes a story that connects the past and the present.
This work is not simply a simple story of the past, but shows how the will and hope of humans who do not lose their dignity even in the face of suffering and oppression continue across generations.
