The bolero rhythm and the cliché of the conquistador (exploited by authors such as Pushkin) aroused the fantasy of the Russian bourgeoisie and served as inspiration for the composers of the time. Decades later, after the Civil War, many Spaniards found refuge in the Soviet Union. The songs sung by the Children of the War moved Shostakovich, who did not hesitate to harmonize them.
