  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Rottefängeren is a newly written Danish opera for young singers. The performance is based on the classic medieval legend but weaves modern youth themes such as love, bullying and loneliness into an updated narrative. The young people are left to themselves, and have made their own rule –

Jutta the bailiff’s daughter rules the group mercilessly and hands out taunts or rewards depending on her mood. Their meeting place is the village well and from the beginning of the opera the rats are ravaging around them. The adults sit in meetings all the time and are of no help – even when disaster approaches! Jutta therefore offers a bounty to whoever can make the village rat-free. This year’s harvest ball is approaching and the opportunity to dance and kiss with your girlfriend must not be ruined by a stupid rat infestation! A frantic rat hunt is set in motion, but Vera, who, like Anna, is left behind, tells her about a special dream she had that night:

“I dreamed of Hameln, of dancing rats in greedy waves, of poisonous buckets for starving mouths, of future flight, and of dancing death”

The opera was written for Sceneklar’s opera line by composer Egil Kolind and librettist Simon Duus. In addition to Sceneklar’s soloists, choral singers from Roskilde Cathedral’s girls’ choir, the Department of Music Science, and a 6-member orchestra

Egil Kolind (b. 1989) is a trained conductor from the Musikhögskolan in Malmö and the Robert Schumann Hochschule, Düsseldorf. He works as a cantor at Roskilde Cathedral, where he is the leader of Roskilde Cathedral’s Boys’ Choir. As a composer, he has written several choral songs for his choirs, and he is currently composing an opera for Höör’s Sommaropera.

Alongside his conducting and composing activities, he is in the process of developing teaching material for music reading, which is aimed at all beginners who want to learn to read music. Look more at: www.aprimavista.dk
