ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Compañía de Ópera BUAP (from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla) has spearheaded a historic revival of Romeo, the long-lost first opera composed by Mexican master Melesio Morales (1838–1908).🎭 Context of the Performance-
- The Piece: Romeo is a bel canto opera written by Melesio Morales (often called the “Father of Mexican Opera”) based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy, featuring an Italian libretto by Felice Romani. It was only performed once in 1863 before disappearing from the stage for over 160 years.
- The Rescue Work: The score was recovered from the Candelario Huízar archive at the National Conservatory of Music. It was painstakingly transcribed by students from the BUAP Faculty of Arts under the research leadership of Mtra. Magda Rey and Natalia Trejo.
- The 2025 World Premiere: Following initial readings, its modern world-premiere staged production took place on November 18, 2025, at the Teatro del Complejo Cultural Universitario (CCU) BUAP.
