How many composers have been inspired by the lovers of Verona portrayed by Shakespeare? From Vincenzo Bellini to Leonard Bernstein via Hector Berlioz, the list is long. If Romeo and Juliet by Charles Gounod, created during the Universal Exhibition of 1867, immediately won popular success, it is undoubtedly because it translated the most finely the life drive of the famous lovers. Four love duets, a fiery waltz, luminous and lyrical music: the whole score quivers with desire and freshness. Who better than Thomas Jolly, one of the most inventive directors of his generation, could celebrate this hymn to youth?
