Romeo and Juliet – Love and Change the World ( French : Roméo et Juliette, de la haine à l’amour ) is a French musical by Gérard Presgurvic created in 2001 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet .

The musical is very different from the original opera: the original English text is not used, almost all the characters know about the two lovers’ “secret” marriage, and the deaths of the two protagonists vary depending on the country in which the musical was produced. The character of Count Montague appears only in the English and Italian productions, while in the other productions, Romeo’s mother is a widow. Furthermore, there are new characters such as Death (French, Belgian, Dutch, Russian, Korean, Taiwanese, and Mexican productions), played by a woman in the show, and by a man in the music videos for ” Verona” and ” Kings of the World ,” and the Poet (French production).

Lady Capulet has greater depth, often representing the voice of reason. Tybalt’s role shifts from a petty character to a young man begging for mercy, his behavior reflecting a childhood marked by hatred.

    Plot
    Act I
The ancestral hatred between the two most powerful families in Verona, the Montagues and the Capulets, very often turns into violence between the two sides. Unable to bear it any longer, the Prince of Verona decrees, under penalty of death, an absolute ban on all fighting in the city between the two factions ( Vérone ). On the other side, while Lady Capulet and Lady Montague denounce the violence of the two clans ( La Haine ), Romeo (the Montagues’ only son) and Juliet (the Capulets’ only daughter) are searching for true love ( Un Jour ).

At the Capulet house, a ball is being organized so that Juliet can meet Count Paris, who asks for her hand ( La Demande en mariage, Tu dois te marier ). During this time, Romeo and his two best friends, Benvolio and Mercutio, walk through the streets of Verona and sing loudly about their longing for simple pleasures ( Les Rois du Monde, La Reine Mab ). Shortly afterward, Romeo confides that he is afraid. Of what? He doesn’t know exactly ( J’ai peur ). Then, hoping to distract him, Benvolio and Mercutio persuade him to accompany them, masked, to the ball being held at the Capulets’ ( Le Bal ). There, from the first glance that Juliet casts upon him, Romeo falls in love, without however knowing who he is exactly ( L’Amour heureux ). Tybalt recognizes Romeo and informs the Capulets. At that moment Romeo and Juliet learn from the Nurse who they are, the son of their worst enemy ( Le Bal 2 ). Devastated (he secretly loves Juliet), Tybalt recognizes that he has grown up with hatred and contempt ( C’est pas ma faute ).

After the ball, Juliet takes refuge in her room and dreams of Romeo ( Le Poète ), who finally joins her, taking great risks, in the Capulet garden. They exchange vows of love and decide to marry as quickly as possible ( Le Balcon ). Knowing that their two families will never agree on this union, Romeo goes to Friar Laurence and begs him to unite them in marriage. He accepts, hoping that this marriage will seal the reconciliation between the two families ( Par amour ).

The next day, Romeo joins his friends and tells the Nurse, who is mocked by everyone ( Les Beaux, les Laids ), that Friar Laurence has agreed to celebrate the wedding that afternoon. The Nurse, who loves Juliet as her own daughter, announces the good news ( Et voilà qu’elle aime ). Finally, Romeo and Juliet become husband and wife before God ( Aimer ).

    Act II
That same evening, Benvolio and Mercutio meet Romeo and accuse him of having betrayed them ( On dit dans la rue ). In the streets of Verona, Tybalt searches for the latter ( C’est le jour ). But, he first encounters Mercutio, who taunts him. Refusing to be insulted in public, Tybalt in turn provokes him to a duel ( Le Duel ). Romeo, arriving unexpectedly, interposes himself between the two men and attempts to calm them. However, by placing himself between them, Tybalt mortally wounds Mercutio. Driven by guilt, revenge, and the innocence of youth, Romeo kills Tybalt ( Mort de Mercutio ). The two families, immersed in mourning, call for vengeance from the Prince ( La vengeance ). Finally, he exiles Romeo from Verona and reflects on the meaning of power ( Le Pouvoir ). In her chamber, Juliet learns the sad news from her Nurse. She finds herself torn between her love for her cousin and her love for her husband. For his part, Romeo takes refuge with Friar Laurence, to whom he confides that exile is worse than death ( Duo du désespoir ).

Later, Romeo and Juliet spend their wedding night together, then, at dawn, Romeo leaves his love to go to Mantua ( Le Chant de l’alouette ).

As soon as her husband leaves, Juliet learns from her parents that she will marry Count Paris the next day ( Tomorrow ). Despite everything, she refuses to bend to his will. Disappointed by Juliet’s behavior, Count Capulet sings of his deep love for his daughter ( I want a girl ). In her room, Juliet wonders why she must obey her parents ( Pourquoi ). While in Mantua, Romeo longs for Juliet, and she visits Friar Laurence. He concocts a plan that, he hopes, will bring a happy ending to the two lovers and their families ( Without her ).

Juliet pretends to agree to marry Paris, but the night before, she drinks a potion prepared by Friar Laurence that will give her the appearance of death ( Le Poison ). The next day, Juliet is laid to rest in the family crypt, hoping to find Romeo near her when she awakens. Sadly, Friar Laurence’s message informing Romeo of the plan does not reach him, and he learns, on the spot, of Juliet’s death from Benvolio ( Comment lui dire? ).

Devastated, he goes to the Capulet family crypt, finds his wife’s remains, and Death kills Romeo ( la Mort de Roméo ). Shortly afterward, Juliet wakes up and can only witness her husband’s suicide. She takes Romeo’s sword and uses it to kill herself ( la Mort de Juliette ). Friar Laurence breaks into the crypt and discovers the bodies of the two lovers. He does not understand why God allowed the story to end this way, and doubts his faith ( J’sais plus ).

Finally, and in memory of the love of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, the two families, feeling responsible for the death of their children, reconcile to live in peace ( Coupables ).
