  Director’s Notes
  Though the original story of Rinaldo takes place during the First Crusade (1096-1099), our production is set in a fantasy world of sword and sorcery. Which characters are the “good guys” may depend on your point of view. Both sides meet on the field of battle, but both sides also use magic to “cheat.” To be fair, Argante starts it, by permitting his sorceress lover to take care of the problem of Rinaldo. Our characters are flawed, human, three-dimensional. Rinaldo is a hero with the sword but does not perform as well when faced with magic, or distracted by thoughts of love. Goffredo sees himself as just, but he and Eustazio engage in some petty gloating when Argante asks for a truce. Almirena tries to be an obedient daughter and keep Rinaldo focused on the battle first, but can’t resist an amorous interlude with him in the garden. Armida and Argante are distracted by sudden and passionate attraction to their enemies. Ultimately, they don’t seem to take their defeat too hard. Could Armida giving up magic, like an alcoholic giving up the bottle, ultimately be a good thing for their relationship?
