  The opera was created from Victor Hugo’s play, “Le Roi s’amuse”. The key character, Rigoletto, is ambivalent: both the King’s jester and a tender and protective father. This is the drama of Rigoletto, he lives in fear of seeing his secret revealed, his daughter Gilda whom he hides from the decadent court and from a libertine Duke.
