Just saw this Rigoletto on television, the cast is good to very good overall; the Gilda and the Maddalena are both very good, the men adequate (Rigoletto) to good (Sparafucile and the Duke). The mise en scène has a number of interesting ideas but in the end did not wholly convince me; I found the concept of the Mantua Court as a circus just silly and typical of regietheater stances that miss the point in its obsession with originality. The stage wizardry was thereby uderutilised and uderdeveloped. I also found Mazzola’s tempi unneccessarily fast, the score definitely benefits significantly from slower ones.
