    PROGRAM LEAFLET
The confiscation of church property did not succeed in suppressing the rise of religious genres in Spanish musical life. The Stabat Mater, composed in 1852 by Nicolás Ledesma, choirmaster of the Collegiate Church of Bilbao, occupies a prominent place in the panorama of 19th-century sacred music in Spain. Its annual performance on Good Friday in the capital of Biscay, in addition to the posthumous tributes dedicated to the composer, reflect the notoriety achieved by this work, which until now had been relegated to unjustifiable oblivion.
